Is it a never-ending battle to get those pesky grammar issues tamed? Does the proper spelling of words elude you? Do you simply want to have another pair of eyes look over your text to see whether it actually makes sense? Look no further, for we are here to help.

The service is run by [Akayume] and [Linderel], the former of whom is a native English attemptee (and word maker-uper extraordinaire) and has a love for literature; the latter, while hailing from Finland, studies English philology and is known for her epic nitpicking skills.

What will the Service proofread?

We take anything and everything from poems to essays to novel drafts. We do, however, reserve the right to reject a submission. There is at least one type of text that will never be accepted: crew applications. As the proofreaders are both also members of the Elftown Council, they cannot help you with your application in such a direct manner. Another instance in which your text might be rejected is if you intend to enter it in an official Elftown competition. As Literature Judges, we should not see any entries before the judging if we have promised to partake in it. Anything else is heartily welcome.

We only ask that you submit your text reasonably early in relation to when you want it to be processed. If you are submitting a chaptered work, please place each chapter on a separate page so as to make our lives a little bit easier.

So how does this submitting thing work, then?

Put your text up on a wiki, then post a link here with some details as to what kind of thing it is you want us to look over.

Example:
Username: [Akayume]
Text link: Proofread Me!
Text length: 927 words
Text type: Fan Fiction
Day submitted: May 12
Urgency level: It would be great if this was done by the end of the month!
Additional notes: Here you can tell us whether there's something specific we should focus on: e.g. grammar, spelling, cohesion, etc.

Your text will be claimed by one of us. The proofreader will then create a new wikipage that has the editing done on it for you, and you can either copy+paste from there, or take what parts you'd like. Once you've been helped, your submission will be moved to Proofread Works.

How fast will you be?

This depends entirely on the type of text you submit, but someone will claim your submission within a day (allowing room for time zones, of course). The proofreader will then strive to be finished within a week. Naturally, if the stipulated deadline is sooner, that deadline will be adhered to.

Do take into account that the proofreaders have lives outside of Elftown. It would be appreciated if you did not submit things which need to be processed by the very next day.

If I ask you to proofread my work faster, will you?

If there arises an urgent need to have your work proofread faster, and you are very polite, we will see what we can do. If you decide, however, to pester to get what you want, we'll have to refuse you. Once again we do have lives that exist outside of this site, and there may be people before you who have waited patiently to have their work proofread.

Submit your text here in the format specified above.

Username: [Mortified Penguin]
Text link: Till Danderfluff
Text length: idunnolol
Text type: Fan Fiction
Day submitted: May 20
Urgency level: EXTREME, maybe even BLACKWATCH PLAID
Additional notes: Made in middle school. The structure definitely needs looking at.

2011-05-20 [Nioniel]: Awesome idea. :)

2011-05-20 [Akayume]: Merci. (:

2011-05-20 [Chimes]: I like.

2011-05-20 [Chimes]: You should probably be careful about essays though, some schols/universities might accuse the member of plagiarism if their text has been on the internet. D: (I know my Uni is really funny about that.)

2011-05-20 [Linderel]: o_o Deeeerp.

2011-05-20 [Akayume]: So, if their own text is on the internet? O.o

2011-05-20 [Lothuriel]: Couldn't the person just not export their wiki? This way, it will only be viewable to Elftown members. I highly doubt there are many teachers/professors running around in the town of Elf!

2011-05-20 [Alexi Ice]: Oh Aka, how I love the! Hahaha <3

2011-05-20 [Chimes]: I know that our Uni tells us they have a scanning program which... some how compares loads of texts at the same time from le interet with our essays - whether it's true or not, I don't know. But it's better to be safe than sorry. Same with publishers, they're less likely to take on stuff that's been anywhere on the internet.

2011-05-20 [Lothuriel]: Perhaps an email addy offered up to those who do not wish their works to be posted online?

2011-05-20 [Mortified Penguin]: If they're anything like my school, their scanning program is called "Google".

2011-05-20 [Chimes]: Mebbe, Mort. :P Could be true.

2011-05-21 [Akayume]: It's all up to the submitter. :P That's their prerogative, not ours. I think it's silly to say, "Hey guys, we can only accept stuff you'll never need to use/want to use anywhere else!" because that's... Well, I'm sure you can see the flaw in that. (:

Not only that, but do you really think every professor checks every paper handed in everywhere on the internet? Prolly not. I would assume they only would if it wasn't in the student's voice/was suspiciously good. :P

We aren't re-writing works. Only proofreading. (:

2011-05-22 [Paul Doyle]: xD  There used to be a punctuation patrol squad, back in a primordial ET era.

2011-05-22 [Linderel]: That's a blank page you just linked to :O

2011-05-22 [Paul Doyle]: Time for the proofreading to commence! ^_~

2011-05-23 [Akayume]: Huzzah!

2011-05-23 [hanhepi]: great idea y'all!

2011-05-23 [Akayume]: Thank you. (:

2011-05-31 [Alexi Ice]: Bleh. I would really like my new Et prose submission proof read by someone. Are both of you judging this one?

2011-05-31 [Linderel]: I am, anyway. I'm not sure about Akay but I think she is as well.

2011-05-31 [Akayume]: I am indeed. :/ Soz. Otherwise I would do it for youuuu. <3

2011-05-31 [Alexi Ice]: No worries ^^ I might get [Thrice] to do it...or I might change my entry again. LOL. Not sure ^^

2011-05-31 [Akayume]: :D :D

2011-06-04 [Mystin]: Why treat this wiki like an official one? It's impolite to say that you won't look at something if it's not good enough. That is not what Elftown is about.

2011-06-04 [Akayume]: We never said we wouldn't look at something if it isn't good enough. o.o

The problem is that if someone's entering one of the official contests here on elftown, and wishes to have something proofread, at least for the contests running now Lin and I are helping to judge them (since we are some of the literature judges). We could not remain impartial if we new who wrote what piece. We're not supposed to know who wrote what. (:

Unless I'm confused, is that what you were implying after?

2011-06-04 [Mystin]: Oh I see, so if my nyctophobia is in an official contest, you can't look at it?

2011-06-04 [Akayume]: If it's for the prose contest or the limerick contest, I cannot. If it's for the limerick contest, I think Lin already entered that, so she could proofread, but both of us have already said we'd judge the next prose contest. (: It was a bit of a mistake on our part. Perhaps for future competitions we'll have one of us judge so the other can still proofread.

2011-06-04 [Mystin]: 0h ok, I understand now. I just thought you all were being like 'if your work sucks, were not looking at it'. My misunderstanding.

2011-06-04 [Akayume]: Nope. (: In fact, it doesn't say anything on this page about work sucking! That would be pretty mean, and would not be fair. Part of a proofreading service is to help people improve, so there would be no point if we only accepted perfect works. (:

2011-06-04 [Mystin]: I totally understand and I didn't mean any disrespect, I simply didn't read the wiki correctly.

2011-06-04 [Akayume]: S'oke. (: Honest mistakes happen.

2011-11-03 [Nocturnaliss]: This is a really neat idea!

2011-11-03 [Akayume]: Thanks! (: I think Lin and I have a good idea.

2011-11-03 [Nocturnaliss]: You really do. It's a good thing it gets a little extra attention.

2011-11-03 [Ravenclaw]: What about a document over 200,000 words long?

2011-11-03 [Linderel]: We would probably ask you to break it into several shorter segments and tell you not to expect us to be done with the entirety all that soon. :P

2011-11-03 [Ravenclaw]: lol thats what i figured. I've got a friend proof reading it now but i kinda want a second opinion lol

2011-11-04 [Akayume]: I'm sorry Mort. Are you upset over the feature? I can't imagine why. :/

2011-11-05 [9jlriexqk,ktpk]: I made a wiki simillar to what you have up now, a kind of proof reading service. But it kinda died. Think its listed in Elftown Wiki's?

2011-11-05 [Priscilla Primkin]: I would like to offer my services as a proofreader.

2011-12-24 [Eyden13]: Hello! I want to tell all of you about Elftown Writing Workshops. Maybe your having trouble with the plot, a character, a scene or the dialogue. This wiki can help! Come check it out.

2012-01-11 [iippo]: Is having something proofread by the 15th too tight a schedule? >.<; It's a short 800 word fable. I'll stick it up, and then take it down in four days :P

2012-01-11 [Linderel]: I think we can manage since it's so short. :)

2012-01-11 [Akayume]: Agreed. :D

2012-01-30 [Synirria]: What if I'm looking for someone to proofread my story but I don't want it up on a website?

2012-01-30 [Linderel]: Then you can send it to us in a private message, I suppose. :) Or an e-mail. Depends on the length - it would be kind of cumbersome to read stories longer than a few hundred words in an ET message.

Alternately, you could look for someone to do it for you IRL.

2012-01-30 [Synirria]: *Nods* I've thought of that and the only two people who I think are good enough are totally a completely biast when it comes to my work. And so far it's 7, short, chapters. If it would be too much I understand

2012-01-30 [Linderel]: Well, we'll discuss it and let you know in a couple of days. Is that alright? :)

2012-01-30 [Synirria]: Perfect...It's not going anywhere lol thanks

2012-01-30 [Akayume]: So Lin and I have been talking, and here's what we think - if it gets e-mailed to one of us, we can open it in googledocs allowing us both to edit and read and make comments etc. We can do this, if you give us a bit more time to look things over and read.

2012-01-30 [Synirria]: You've got all the time in the world lol...I'm at a bit of a stand point in my writing so I figure get what I've got looked at then go from there

2012-04-06 [Ravenclaw]: Hello?

2012-04-06 [Akayume]: I'm here, sort of. :P It's the end of the year here, so I've had midterm after midterm after midterm. >.< Ugh.

2012-04-06 [Ravenclaw]: I just wanted to make sure since I hadn't heard anything yet. I figured people might be arguing on who would take such a large project.

2012-04-07 [Akayume]: We'll probably tackle it together. :O Lemme shoot Lami a message.

2012-04-07 [Ravenclaw]: I've only got the first 3 chapters rewritten at the moment, I've been sort of busy.

2012-04-07 [Synirria]: Any chance you have looked over mine at all?

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: I'm beginning to believe I should find a different service. I know I've not uploaded the whole thing but has anyone even started on my chapters? I'm not going to bother taking the time to upload the whole thing if no one is going to proof it.
I know I said no rush but that was months ago when I added the story... four months ago.

2012-07-18 [Linderel]: Apologies. Both of our online lives seem to have kind of collapsed in the past months. We completely understand if you want to take yourself elsewhere; believe me, I started to frustrate myself a long time ago. If, however, you find a dollop of patience I believe we could get our act together and actually start coming out with comments in the near future.

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: Considering I have no idea where to begin searching for a new proofreading service, I can wait a bit longer I guess. I've got two sequels to this novel in the works and it's hard to find the motivation to write and finish them when I know the first one is stuck in a constipated state of "Not quite finished".

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: I've been waiting for 14 months... *sniffles*

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: Yours is like a couple thousand words long. You can't dump that into Microsoft word and have it proof it for you?

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: This wiki offers more than a simple spell check. And, as you can see by the example, there's no problem with shorter works. In fact, I think they'd be happier to receive shorter, easier to read works than novels.

2012-07-18 [Synirria]: I've been waiting for almost 7 months...good thing I have a close friend who's reading it over as well.. I want to cover my ass

2012-07-18 [Linderel]: I unfortunately cannot comment on your situation, Aina, because I still have no access to your text. I'll have to poke Akay about it. :)

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: Why does everyone on Elftown make me wait for over a year on things...? ;_;

2012-07-18 [Synirria]: Because your such a meany...Only kidding :(

Thanks [Linderel]

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: *runs away crying and flailing, knocking a bunch of stuff off the shelf and breaking a vase*

2012-07-18 [Synirria]: *Purses lips together before hurrying after you. Corners you down a hallway and pats your head* It'll be alright

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: Will it though? Will it?! *sobs on the wall, ruining a perfectly good paint job*

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: My point about Microsoft word is that it also checks grammatical mistakes, but you have to engage the function.

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: Firstly, my computer doesn't even have Word. And it doesn't give you tips or help you with structure or anything else. Plus, it's kind of an idiot and often suggests grammar that doesn't make sense. Besides, the same could be done for your work. You could just put it in Word and check spelling and grammar, but yet you choose to come here instead.

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: My document is over 200,000 words long. I intend to try and get it published. I need more advice than a paperclip can give me.

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: Me too. But yet, you don't think I deserve more than a mere word processor?

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: I never said that. My comment was based on the length, not the quality of the text.

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: Why do you hate me?!

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: I don't hate you Mort, I admittedly dislike you. There's a difference.

But to answer your Q, it's mostly because no matter where we happen to cross paths, you contradict everything I have to say no matter what the subject. I could say grass was green and the sky was blue and you'd find some way to argue about it. Then lololol like your harmless and I'm the ass. You're a troll and therefore often not worth bothering with.

2012-07-18 [Mortified Penguin]: ...I disagree!

2012-07-18 [Ravenclaw]: SEE!

2012-07-18 [Thunder Cid]: <img:stuff/aj/101743/1342655656.gif>

2012-07-19 [Ravenclaw]: <img100*0:http://i.imgur.com/HLGJP.gif>

2012-07-19 [Akayume]: Sorry. D: Aina, perhaps you can e-mail me again? I'm terribly sorry. Work and school are killing me.

2012-07-19 [Synirria]: Message me your email again please

2013-12-17 [Mortified Penguin]: It's been nearly 14 years since I submitted my work for proofreading.

2014-05-06 [Jadala*(Once upon a moment)]: The collection of Harry Potter flavored usernames here is fucking fantastic. I had to mention that. Aside from that, there are many editing and proof reading services available if you're able to shell out the cash for it. It is a job that takes up a lot of a person's time and concentration to do right so they DO charge accordingly. However, you could try asking for help from some English majors at the local college, (they need practice) for one, they come cheap for two and they have a good idea what they're talking about. Aside from that- sup peeps! Greetings to the various people I do not know. -ME

2014-05-06 [Ravenclaw]: For what it's worth, my username isn't Harry Potter related.
